Introduction: Addiction-like eating behavior (AEB) is characterized by increased appetite and poor dietary control, factors related to obesity and eating disorders. To date, there is no validated tool in Mexico for assessing this aspect.
Methods: Instrumental study with longitudinal non-experimental design. Content validity was assessed using content validity ratio (CVR) with health professionals, and face validity was determined through a pilot test. For construct validity, participants were randomly assigned to exploratory factor analysis or confirmatory factor analysis (EFA-CFA). Convergent validity was assessed using the Binge Eating Scale (BES) and discriminant validity using the ORTO-14-MX tool through Spearman correlations. Internal consistency was determined using Cronbach's alpha (CA) and reproducibility by means of the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Statistical analyses were performed using JASP, setting significance at p<0,05.
Results: In content validity (n= 3), all items obtained CVR = 1, while 7 items were modified in their wording to improve clarity. Face validity (n= 37) confirmed clarity and relevance of the items. For construct validity (n= 516), EFA and CFA confirmed the two-factor structure ("Appetitive drive”-8 items and “Low dietary control”-5 items) after removing two items with inadequate factor loadings (<0,40), resulting in 13 items. The AEBS-Mx showed strong convergent validity with BES (r = 0,702, p<0,001), adequate discriminant validity with ORTO-14-MX (r = -0,247, p<0,001), excellent CA (0,89) and satisfactory ICC (0,81).
Conclusions: The 13-item AEBS-Mx maintained its original two-factor structure and exhibited adequate psychometric properties in the Mexican population. Its validation provides a tool for clinical screening and for research on AEB in Mexico.
